Spyros Kintzios
Biotechnology
Professor Spyridon Kintzios is the Rector of the Agricultural University of Athens since 2018. He holds a Ph.D. in Genetics from TU Munich, Germany, with background studies in Agricultural Science and Chemistry. He directs the AUA Laboratory of Cell Technology.
He has working experience of over 30 years in Biotechnology, particularly in the fields of Biosensors and Cell Engineering, with actual products of his research being in operation in 11 countries. He is the author or co-author of more than 160 peer-reviewed articles in cited international scientific journals, as well as the author or co-author of more than 90 international book chapters and conference presentations.
He is also the author or editor of six international books and holder of two European and four national patents. He has coordinated and participated in more than 40 European, international and national funded research projects. He has participated in the foundation of the Hellenic Biotechnology Cluster and the Hellenic Society for Nanotechnological Applications in Medicine and Health Science.
He is a member of several public and industry committees in Greece and abroad, including the Hellenic Agricultural Academy and the National Council for Research, Technology and Innovation. He is also co-founder of the AUA spin-off companies Ce.B.Tec and Key2Core and is included in the Stanford University list of the top 2% researchers worldwide.

Eleni Miliou
Aquaculture
Dr Eleni Miliou is a Biologist with postgraduate studies in Hydrobiology and Aquaculture. She is Professor of Applied Hydrobiology and participates in the teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate courses of the Department of Animal Science of the Agricultural University of Athens.
She is Vice Rector for European University, Internalization and Student Affairs at AUA since the beginning of 2023. She was a member of the first Council of the Agricultural University of Athens from 2013 to 2017.
She is the Head of the Laboratory of Applied Hydrobiology and director for the Quality System implemented by this laboratory, according to ELOT EN ISO/IEC 17025:2017. She has published 62 scientific papers in international peer-reviewed scientific journals and 88 papers in conference proceedings. She is a regular member of the National Aquaculture Council from 2016 to the present.
She has been Coordinator in twelve research funding projects, Principal Investigator of the research carried out by AUA in seven projects and Researcher in nine additional projects. She is the Scientific Responsible on behalf of AUA for the Joint Master’s Degree “Marine Biotechnology” within EU-CONEXUS and Leader of WP7 “Research to Education” in EU-CONEXUS Plus.
Her research interests focus on growth, biometry, metabolism, haematology, population dynamics, stress responses, chemical composition and fatty acid profile of aquatic organisms, sustainable aquaculture, quality of fishery and aquaculture products, welfare of cultured aquatic organisms, toxicity effects of pollutants, nutritional requirements of cultured fish, fish oil and fish meal replacement in aquafeeds, flow of energy and nutrients in aquatic ecosystems, Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture, population dynamics of aquatic animals and fish species identification using molecular tools.

Constantina Costopoulou
Informatics
Professor Constantina Costopoulou is the Head of the Informatics Laboratory in the Department of Agricultural Economics and Rural Development at the Agricultural University of Athens.
She holds a BSc in Mathematics from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, an MSc in Software Engineering from Cranfield University in the United Kingdom, and a PhD from the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the National Technical University of Athens.
Her research focuses on Digital Transformation, Digital Business and Data Analytics, with particular emphasis on AI-driven innovation in the agricultural sector. She has authored over 120 publications in scientific journals, edited volumes and peer-reviewed conference proceedings, and has served as scientific coordinator of several funded European and national research projects.
Serko Haroutounian
Natural Products
Serkos A. Haroutounian is Professor of Chemistry at the Agricultural University of Athens and Senior Vice-President of the Executive Committee of FAO for Europe and Central Asia.
His research focuses on the Chemistry of Natural and Synthetic Bioactive Compounds, with specific interest in circular economy and the development of bioactive food additives, functional foods, biocides and medicines.
He has authored 186 scientific articles published in international scientific journals, 11 book chapters and holds 2 patents, with more than 6,500 citations. He has coordinated the successful implementation of 36 research projects concerning the development of novel bioactive preparations, the circular economy and the mitigation of climate change consequences.
His project DIONYSOS was awarded as best of the best environmental project of the European Union for 2008. He has also contributed to the recognition of singularities of twelve Greek traditional agricultural products and foodstuffs and prepared certification dossiers for their registration as PDO or PGI products.
Alex Koutsouris
Agricultural Economics
Professor Alex Koutsouris serves in the Unit of Agricultural Extension, Rural Systems and Rural Sociology, Department of Agricultural Economics and Rural Development, Agricultural University of Athens.
He specializes in Agricultural Knowledge and Innovation Systems, Innovation Support Services, interactive innovation and communication, agricultural education and training, and sustainable rural development with emphasis on participatory methods.
He has published and presented papers on these topics, served as guest co-editor in scientific journals and publications, and participated as a member of boards of relevant scientific societies, international conferences and meetings. He has served as President of the steering committees of IFSA, ESEE and ETAGRO, as well as of the Hellenic Agricultural Organization ELGO-DIMITRA.
He has also served as an expert with FAO, the World Bank, the Strategic Working Group AKIS of the EU Standing Committee on Agricultural Research, and as a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee of PRIMA. He is currently a member of the Editorial Committee of The Journal of Agricultural Education and Extension, member of the boards of GFRAS and EUFRAS, and cooperating expert with the EU CAP Evaluation Helpdesk.
He has participated in several research and collaboration projects, including the HORIZON projects ATTRACTISS, TEAPOTS, AgroFossilFree, AGRI-LINK, AgriDemo-F2F and AGRISPIN, and has served as member of the International Advisory Boards of NEFERTITI, NEWBIE and modernAKIS.
Aristeidis Mertzanis
Environmental Impact Analysis
Dr Aristeidis Mertzanis is Emeritus Professor at the Agricultural University of Athens, Greece. His fields include Environmental Geoscience, Environmental Impact Assessment and Sustainability.
He is a senior environmental scientist and geologist with more than 35 years of experience in Environmental Impact Assessment, Environmental Geomorphology and Sustainable Development. He has a proven record in academic leadership, research and participation in EU-funded projects, as well as extensive teaching experience in undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
His core competencies include Environmental Impact Assessment, Environmental Geomorphology, Sustainable Development, Natural Hazards Management, Environmental Policy and Ecotourism.
He has served as Professor in the Department of Agribusiness and Supply Chain Management at the Agricultural University of Athens, Professor in the General Department of AUA, Vice Rector of the Technological Educational Institute of Central Greece, and Professor in the Department of Forestry and Natural Environment Management.
He holds a PhD in Geomorphology from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, postgraduate studies in Aerophotogrammetry and Photointerpretation for the Management of Agricultural and Natural Resources from the Overseas Agronomic Institute and the University of Florence, and a BSc in Geology from the University of Bologna.
His research focuses on Environmental Impact Assessment, Environmental Geomorphology and Ecotourism. He has more than 130 peer-reviewed publications, is co-author of the book “Environment – Environmental Impact Assessment” and has participated in EU-funded and national research projects.
Sotirios Karetsos
Informatics
Sotirios T. Karetsos is Assistant Professor at the Informatics Laboratory of the Department of Agricultural Economics and Rural Development at the Agricultural University of Athens.
He holds an integrated MSc and a BSc in Agricultural Biotechnology from the Agricultural University of Athens, an MBA in Economic–Engineering Systems from the joint postgraduate programme of the National Technical University of Athens and the University of Piraeus, and a PhD from the Informatics Laboratory of the Agricultural University of Athens.
He has served in a range of academic, governmental and international research positions, including at the Ministry of Rural Development and Food, as a Seconded National Expert and external collaborator at the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission in Italy, and as a researcher at the Agricultural University of Athens.
He has authored more than 70 publications in scientific journals, edited volumes and peer-reviewed conference proceedings, and has contributed more than 60 reports for the European Commission.
His research focuses on the design, development and implementation of information systems for internet-based service delivery, as well as the application of internet technologies in e-commerce, e-government and e-learning. His broader interests include social network analysis, mobile application development, business models and innovation in the digital economy, information systems modelling and business process analysis.
